Cannabutter

I have been making CannaButter in this exact way for over 50 years.
I do not believe that there is a shortcut, and I do not mix any additive to “boost” THC content.. I personally have tried a few dozen butters made by others in various ways, and did not find the potency to be present. I DO NOT use Soy Lecithin.
I also do not decarboxylate the weed.
It is about to spend 12 hours “decarbing” in hot butter.
Tested against butter made by many self proclaimed pros, that decarb 1st… they all have admitted that my butter is as strong, or stronger.
The only time I decarboxylate is when I am going to use green MJ directly in a recipe…
and then I do it stovetop in a dry frying pan.

The process:

I use one pound of UNSALTED Butter.
I use a 3 quart crock Pot

on the low setting, I pour a quart of water into crock pot and allow it to heat
Once hot, I place the pound of Butter into the crock pot.
When the butter is melted, I add one ounce of completely dried and ground flowers.

Stir and make sure to clean the sides of crock pot with the spoon every hour to lower that golden ring of THC that will form back into the liquid.
This is done for 8 to 12 hours.
12 hours allows clarification of the butter into what chefs call “Ghee”
Pour through a screen strainer, and leave for 8 hours.

You will begin to see the Cannabutter separating

Cannabutter is rising to the top, and excess solid matter begins to form below the butter
and part of it starts heading to the vessel’s bottom

There will be some plant matter adhering to the plug’s bottom.
This is scraped off easily with a knife.

After 8 hours of refrigeration the butter looks like a plug of melted green crayon.
Take a knife and go around the vessel’s edge where cannabutter sits, and lift
out the plug.

Summary:
Butter:
unsalted butter.. 4 bars (1 pound… 454 grams)
cook on low in crock pot with a quart of water, and one full ounce of well ground bud.
cook 12 hours stirring once an hour (and scraping sides of crock pot downwards.)
filter through regular kitchen strainer. pour into graduated measuring cup, and refrigerate overnight.
remove plug in morning and scrape away any residual weed at plug bottom.
Weigh the plug.. it will be as low as 227 grams (1 cup) even though you started with 2 cups…
this is because you clarified the waters and milk solids out of it by cooking so long at low heat.
You will base recipe on 1 cup… meaning you will use 227 grams of the butter (your butter may actually weigh up to 375 grams.. the more reduced the stronger.)
1/2 cup recipe is 113 grams of butter

Thanks for the cooking class. I will not make it myself but I love your explanation with pictures. What will you do afterwards with this butter, cake?

I will make caramels.

Caramel class will be posted today.

I remember this thread well and am glad it is now posted here. I made it a few different ways before reading this method back on FC and used this with great results ever since. The only difference is a lot of the time I use coconut oil and my crock pot low setting seems to be a bit high so I do it for 5 hours.

I would love a crock pot with exact temperature control as this one I have is a cheap £15 and most that i see are no better even the more expensive ones do not have exact temp control. This one has low and high and low too high imo. Just need to search for an exact temperature one after posting this.

I love to see Sam’s thread (the author of the page) being passed around.
He was a personal friend who sadly passed away a couple years ago now.
I visited him in Phoenix many times, getting some first hand lessons along the way.
He taught me how to make medicine out my cannabis, not just get high.

Thanks for the reminder. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Does anyone of you know the vivosun decarboxilator & infusor?

I never used it and would like to know if it can be used with less than 600ml.

This one actually functions similarly to the Magic Butter Machine, though is more modern.

While the manufacturer info says that you must use 600 ml, the info that I found indicates that you can use 500 ml with your Vivosun decarboxylator and infuser. The machine holds a maximum of 1.2 liters (40.6 fl. oz.). A 500 ml volume is well under the maximum limit. It will also stay well above the minimum fill line required to run the machine safely.

Learned all my decarb and extraction from Psychedelic Sam. He had A great idea for infusing simple syrup that led to a base syrup you can put into hot or cold drinks. My number one request from the med crowd (mostly chronic pain so they can handle A half teaspoon of syrup).

I always decarb first. I sometimes wonder if the long processing leads to other conversions like cbn that make a sleepier, heavier medication. Nano emulsion is here and able to be done at home pulling us even with the dispensaries.

Edit: I use an Ardent Flex to decarb. Most of these appliances run the same tech so performance only varies A little from feedback I have read over a few years. There are outliers like a bad batch of a particular model (sensors) that may drag A brand down. In this day and age everything is a roll of the dice.

Thanks for the recipe i have not heard of that method, looks really good.
For those who can´t or don´t want to eat butter, olive oil is also a good way of extracting the ingredients. The olive oil needs to be warmer then 60C (140F) to extract. The THC saturation is around 30% by weight. Decarbing inside the oil will take 2x or 3x as long but will destroy less terps compared to decarbing in an open atmosphere.

For sience i experminted with a lower filling of the Vivosun Decarboxilator & Infusing mashine. It worked really good with 20g of medium frosty leaves (20g after decarbing) and 200g coconut oil. Maybe i pressed out the leaves a little to much so it turned more green than it would have been without pressing. I used the default settings of the device for decarbing and infusing.

Really potent result with a nice cocos flavour and only little taste of flower.

I’m good with the green. I’m a Chlorophyll fan! Your Coconut oil looks great!

(I also like the Marijuana flavor when it is imparted.)

Looks good. Pretty much a bullseye on what the finished product should look like.

Made my first batch of cannabutter a while back and finally made some caramels with it a few days ago. I little on the weak side which I expected with the sugar leaf used but damn I love the flavor. The mild roasty weed flavor of the candy is off the chart.
