A while ago, I got impatient waiting for a wireless ZX to be released, so I wondered if maybe I could cobble together a home brew amazon special until one did come out. It’ll be cheap, dirt cheap, but still aiming for a peaky flavour blast with small \< .15g loads. Here’s the basic haul of parts:

 ![01](https://420vapegeeksdiscourse-803871049052-us-east-2-an.s3.dualstack.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/uploads/original/3X/2/a/2a0556d69af9e94ec5686ce1cf8f82b6ee70e4ca.jpeg)

- Amazon hexagonal concrete ashtray I bought quite a while back.
- A 3D Printed Ashtray and Coil Holder specifically for that Ashtray (step file linked below)
- 16mm barrel coil I had laying around
- 5.5 grams of 3mm corundum balls for a nice spiky heat curve
- 2 concentrate pads (I’m using S&B ones)
- m2 threaded rod and nuts and a small handle

I also looked for the roundest 304 Stainless tubing I could find, 14mm/13mm OD/ID, and 16mm/14mm OD/ID. Stuff from ‘METERXITY’ on Amazon seems to work well. I bought 2 feet of each diameter for $40 CAD total , and I have enough for another 10-15 housings. Access to a dremel tool, and heavy duty pipe cutters (the kind you spin around the pipe) is a must.

[Base and Coil Clamp for Concrete Ashtray.step](https://420vapegeeks.com/uploads/short-url/lY0S1nOtNxrQYacymX6bD0u6mB5.step) (114.8 KB)

 ![02](https://420vapegeeksdiscourse-803871049052-us-east-2-an.s3.dualstack.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/uploads/original/3X/e/8/e83bffc220b80032cd5e24e7ea6c5658514ea637.jpeg)

Ignore the scratches. They are well used! 27mm length for the 16mm OD tube, and 37mm for the other will be perfect for 5.5g of rubies. A spinning pipe cutter creates a perfect round outer edge with a small inner lip. Leave the lip on the bottom of each tube, but dremel smooth the tops. The bottom lip on the large tube keeps the smaller tube from slipping through, and the bottom lip of the smaller tube keeps the concentrate pad in place.

 ![03](https://420vapegeeksdiscourse-803871049052-us-east-2-an.s3.dualstack.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/uploads/original/3X/f/3/f3b3739f2768efab79b0aa610a7a91f8357cb9d2.jpeg)

A bit of emery cloth and buffing with the dremel will allow them to slide freely. Smooth and burr free openings are the key or the injector will constantly ‘catch’ and drive you crazy. You should get it now. Drill a hole for the m2 rod. Be careful you don’t hulk out on the drill and squish the pipe out of round.

 ![04](https://420vapegeeksdiscourse-803871049052-us-east-2-an.s3.dualstack.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/uploads/original/3X/8/e/8ee9f24ff48625de545804b3f91b978a5d548f47.jpeg)

The concentrate pad should fit in with a little bit of persuasion. Fill with the 5.5g of 3mm ruby balls, then top off with another concentrate pad. The concentrate pad on the bottom is awesome. Completely evens out the flow.

Rig up a handle by bending a threaded rod 90 degrees and securing with nuts. Again, careful not to go hulk and tighten the tube out of round. A vertical handle is best. A DIY tube vape without a mirror finish will catch horribly with a perpendicular offset handle.

For a bowl, I just use any 14mm Female fitting with a 19mm screen pushed in (a 13mm diameter rod is perfect screen tool). I happen to have a bunch of 14F18M adapters that are perfect with hookah grommets.

Nice and even cook throughout with the concentrate pad! I run mine at 250c, and it has a nice peaky heat curve with a flavour extraction to match! If you don’t mind stainless in your air path and have a few parts laying around or within an easy click, chip in with a few friends and make a bunch of your own. It’s so satisfying! Satisfaction even doubles when you get through it baked and with your digits intact.

Update:

The hardest part of this is the 16mm tube cutting, and polishing the inside for things to slide smoothly. Can be completely replaced with an off the shelf M14x16x20mm stainless spacer. So the only tube cutting will be for the 14mm injector tube.

And here’s a rough parts list with cost (Canadian Dollars) and links:

M14x16x20mm Stainless Spacer - [$2.72 per piece](https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0F6LYVJ11?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1)

14mm Stainless Tube - [Roughly $1.50 a piece after cutting](https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0DZXLF7HZ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1)

Concentrate Pads - [Roughly $5.50 for 2](https://www.storz-bickel.com/en-ca/magazine-dosing-capsules-fillingpad)

Works out to about $83, so lets round up to about $100 for a small one hit 14mm injector, with controller and coil, geared towards flavour and a completely even cook. Other bits and bobs like ashtray, 3d printed parts, tools, etc… are up to you.

Love the DIY stuff. I will have to make one of these.

I use a lot of that uxcell / METERIXITY ss tubing to make my logs. It’s nice stuff, definitely rounder than the K&S stuff they have at the hardware store. They also have 316, but not in as many sizes. Not that I think there is anything wrong with 304.

I used to cut it with a pipe cutter. It works, of course, and the lip can be useful. But it leaves a pretty nasty burr. Those cutters are really designed for soft metal tubing. SS on the other hand is hard to begin with and work hardens like crazy, resulting in the burrs. But you probably know this already.

Anyway, I switched to using a small abrasive chop saw to cut the log tubing pieces. The one I have is kind of shit and can only do up to 12mm. I should get something at least a little bigger. This will leave some burr still of course but it is much narrower, and less hard, so not as hard to remove with one of those swiveling blade deburr tools (get plenty of blades with them, ss wears them out fast).

The concentrate pad is interesting! Have you tried it with just a normal basket screen? Wonder if it would be worth it for the airflow.

Good finds on the cheap PIDs and coils.

Since you’re comfortable with the ss tubing and stuff already, I’d highly recommend a log build too! I have a guide for how to make a halogen one posted in my thread here:

>
> Hello, wanted to make a quick tutorial on how to make the DIY logs I posted earlier. The “1010” is a microdoser, “2012” is a heavy hitter for a log, both will work in the in between dosage range. 1010 has a 10W bulb and takes 10mm stems, 2012 has a 20W bulb and takes 12mm stems. I generally recommend the 2012. Please let me know if anything is unclear or you need advice on where to buy some of this stuff. Materials: Halogen bulb - 12V 10W G4 base for the 1010 or 12V 20W GY6.35 base for the 201…

I can also help out with any advice or some parts. You could even make a combination of this and a log if you used a heater cartridge from a 3D printer.

Other ideas:

- Try a “diffuser” arrangement as well, with the bowl fitting into the heater, instead of the heater into the bowl
- Use 14mm or 18mm male/female ground glass joint blanks to make bowls/stems that can go into your water pipe either directly or with a male-male adapter

Very cool, nice build, love seeing stuff like this. I should have most of the parts for a build I’m working on by Thursday. To cut my tubing I am planning to use a hacksaw, with bimetal highspeed steel 32tpi blade and a probably some kind of jig and clamping so I cut it straight.

Definitely, the burrs from the pipe cutter are bad but a dremel tool takes care of it a lot easier than deburring tools on 304. The cutters I use are advertised for stainless, and they seem to be holding up, but I would love a chop saw. Unfortunately, an apartment is not exactly conducive to a lot of powered bench tools. Have to make do with smaller tools, but a 3d printer helps quite a bit. Printing out various one off jigs for the dremel was a game changer.

I’ve been on a long journey trying to find the perfect combination of screens and rubies for a perfectly even roast. Faceted rubies could work well, but the restricted airflow they create in narrow injectors kills it for me, and depending on how they clump up, they’re still quite erratic. I was experimenting with these pads as screens for bowls in dry pipes, and it finally clicked these pads are perfect for smoothing out and evenly dispersing heat (cheaply). And the best part is they have a completely open airflow unless you crush them. Two of them in series, plus the 5.5g of 3mm rubies in between still lets me take a full inhale less than 5 seconds. The medium ground bud in the bowl actually ramps up the restriction more than the injector does.

A log of some sort is actually on my list! I want the ball vape goodness with the safety and aesthetics of a nice log. Now that I know how to get an even flow with a narrow injector, I might order up some custom 14mm coils and see if I can embed a wired version in a small log complete with PID and everything. Surprisingly, custom coils in relatively small bulk amounts are dirt cheap. I was quoted $17 per for a custom 14mm x 25mm tall coil in just a small 10 piece ‘bulk’ order. Cheaper for larger orders. Crazy! But then again, I would absolutely love a glowing pulsing halogen log vape. 🤔

I’ll have to look into a stainless tubing cutter. My chop saw is truly tiny, and would fit in a shoebox, but yeah I get you.

Have you tried smaller round rubies? 2.5 or 2mm? Conceptually I like them a little better than the gemcuts. I got mine from MG Vapor Solutions.

Your concentrate pads must be more open than the ones I used to have. Good solution.

The 14mm coils sound cool. Where are you quoting those? I am interested in getting some 18V 100W ones for a battery powered build. Price sounds great. I’ve also wondered about a log ball vape hybrid, but haven’t had too many good ideas.

The halogen glow is fun. My favorite is still the one I made with temp control. It would go dim when idle and then bright on the draw.

I haven’t tried the smaller round rubies. 3mm seems to work well in the narrow injector, and I use 2.5-3.5mm gemcut rubies for anything larger in diameter, depending in resistance. I have so many now, I’m set for the next few builds.

I searched on [made-in-china.com](http://made-in-china.com) for “enail” or something similar. You can message manufacturers for custom configs and bulk pricing if it’s not already listed.

I finally got to try the hacksaw. It was ugly and took a long time on the first try. I didn’t clamp the tubing well enough until halfway through though so I’m going to try again. I do have a standard pipe cutter for copper I might try too. The pipe cutter for stainless is tempting but for $70 let me see if I can get my hacksaw to work 😂

Edit: my tubing cutter worked but it closed the tube a bit which isn’t what I wanted.

Edit2: the hacksaw works pretty well with better clamping, cutting fluid (bar oil), and support. Left a big old burr at the end but easy to clean up. Still takes some time to cut through one tube.

Glad the hacksaw worked out. I’m still trying to find a cheap handle solution such that drilling isn’t necessary. Drilling without a drill press or jig and keeping the tube round might actually be the hardest part of all.

Something like the star nuts they use in bicycle headsets would be nice. I looked and they don’t make them that small, though. I didn’t see a star washer that would be an appropriate size either. I have gotten custom laser cut washers for my logs. A little press-fit internal washer like this quotes out at only 1.00 for qty 10 in .060" 316. Could be an option. Design could be improved some of course, but just to get a ballpark, if you were interested in making more of these or kits. Wouldn’t be as secure as the through-bolt though, which is important. But I think a little bit oversized and bent it would maybe be secure enough.

A micro star nut would be great. Could possibly machine them in bulk, but I think I found something even easier.

Seeing as this is a cheap solution, the cheapest thing I can think of is to make the injector tube 90 - 100mm long. The length acts as a handle that dissipates enough heat along its length where a small insulator like a silicone grommet works as a handle. I had it running all night, and no problems so far. Trick is to make it look decent and cover enough of the tube to make it safe. I’ll try to snap some picks when I get home tonight.

If you don’t mind drilling and want to keep the original design, I drill the tube pretty easily and cheaply using a milescraft Drill Block clamped to the tube, with a piece of 5/8" wood dowel inside the tube, and a split point drill bit for metal. I had the drill block and clamps already, the drill bit was $5 and the dowel was $3. I had to sand down the dowel with 120grit sandpaper, just by wrapping the paper around and twisting, to get it to fit but that only took about 5 minutes. Now I use the wood dowel to support the tube when I’m sawing and the added stability makes that go much smooth too. I place the wood just next to where I’m cutting and drilling, not actually cutting or drilling into the wood.

You could also cut a “heat break” between the handle and the injector part. I do this with my logs. Just cut 3 slits around the circumference with a hacksaw, leaving 1/16" or so of metal in between. Reduces the area for conductive heat transfer by a lot.

Great idea. I made a jig which worked out okay, but a 13mm rod inside the tube should work great, especially clamped to a vise. Still on the hunt for something anyone can do without major tools, and drilling through a narrow tube will probably put people off. But I’ll be making a 13mm inner rod support for a drill press instead of my outer support. 👍

I thought about minimizing conduction with slits, but it again requires cutting unfortunately. Easy enough for me, but I don’t plan of selling any of these. I just want a dead simple diy solution where cost isn’t a limiting factor, so people can try a decent ball vape if they want to. I absolutely love the high end stuff, but realistically, we’re just heating up air and blowing it through weed. Should be more dirt cheap options I’m thinking. 😛

Absolutely. This is probably the cheapest I have seen, great work on it.

On second thought, a little hack sawing isn’t so bad, and it sure beats trying to drill. It’s a couple of seconds with a dremel and a cutting wheel. So I think this is the way for the time being. And on the plus side, I can completely plug the top end and just use the slits as the intake.

Here’s a quick bodge job on a longer tube with 2 rows of slits that also act as the intake. Can remove one of the the stainless pads on top as it’s closed now. At the top, just a simple cork pushed into/around the tube. Pushes on with a little effort since the tube end is naturally a little sharp after the tube cutter. The slits can be cut a lot cleaner, and the top section can be shortened a bit. Once I test this out for a few days, I’ll put out a new complete parts list…

Looking good! Yeah, I would think a hacksaw or fast abrasive cutter would also make quick work of it, and tube deformation could be pretty minimal.

By the way, this is credited to Alan who makes the Heat Island log after which this technique is named. He calls it Heat Island Technology. In that design the slots also act as the air intake. It was a major step forward from earlier logs which suffered from wood charring issues.

I think you’re really onto something with this tubing design also. Can get nice thin 0.5mm walls easily, more room for balls. So much cheaper than machining. I can think of some interesting possibilities for other configurations too.

For sure, it’s nice not having to deal with the CNC turnaround times and prices, but the fact we can so easily send designs now for one off single piece manufacturing of just about any material we can think of is insane.

There are very inexpensive [flange couplers](https://www.amazon.ca/Couplers-Bearing-Fittings-Connector-Accessory/dp/B0DZXPXCPX?tag=vapegeektj-20) in various sizes that’ll hold the tubes rigidly in a log device. The flange couplers can even act as a mounting point for a handle for wireless injectors, but I’m trying out an even cheaper solution with just washers. In any case, we’re very close to being able to just send designs around and home manufacture our own stuff. The insanely cheap price of 3d printers sure helps, but the next big one I’m waiting for are desktop CNC machines for hobbyists. They have some that handle aluminium well, but it won’t be long until a nice 5-axis mini desktop machine that does stainless appears in the wild.
