For me it does a lot. I know it’s for vaping but I also just like to look at it. When I hold my green Solo 3v2 with my customized stems in my hands I just can’t keep my eyes of it. To get on my wish list or to buy a new one it just has to be attractive to me. The Frolic is an example of a vape I wouldn’t buy, it’s ugly, I don’t like the colors and the form. But vapes like the Ubik, TM2, the nomad…they get me real excited.
Do you all think like that or doesn’t appearance matter?
When I was in my phase of collecting Log Vapes, I found this to be very true. A properly “Bees Waxed” log and a matching wooden stem made me feel very comfortable and pleased with my environment.
Myrtlezap was my first collection… later to be called Aromazap.
Look is a factor but in the end it’s about the whole package. I have a Frolic and a Venty and while I don’t find the Frolic downright ugly (it kinda looks like tactical gear), it’s not very aesthetic for sure. The Venty, on the other hand, looks like a Soviet sex toy, so yeah…
Either way, both are great vapes, so I don’t care how they look.
But when using the Simrell I really do appreciate the refined look. But only because it’s also a great vape. If it was a pain in the ass to use, all the looks in the world wouldn’t compell me to.
Appearance sometimes matters and sometimes doesn’t. Theres a ton of internal subjectivity to it. Like with the Frolic, it was designed with brutalism influence and likened by the creator to the old 70s appliances that were built to last. It wasn’t meant to be pretty, so with that in mind I appreciate it. The form in hand is also extremely pleasant which factors into my feelings on appearance. Then also the fact there’s still no portable oven I know that can match it.
Then you have the Flaske. Nobody I know other than my buddy really drinks alcohol around me, and we know people who have died from alcoholism both friends and family. That was a huge turn off for me (but I still bought it ultimately caving to VAS). I still wouldn’t feel comfortable using that one in front of my own parents who in their old age have lightened up on many things but I use other devices around them no problem.
Then you have artisinal vapes where appearance is the absolute main thing that matters to me. The Toad, Firewood, Nomad, BAKx, and Ubik are all beautiful vapes and I almost don’t even care about the internal components because I appreciate the craft itself so much.
A lot more than just the look goes into processing appearance for me, is what I’m getting at. Understanding the appearance is just as important.
Now, on the flipside, if it isn’t something made moderately durable it doesn’t matter how pretty it looks, that part won’t move me any closer to wanting it.
When S&B came out with the Volcano Hybrid in green, I had to have it. It’s definitely a want, not a need. I work it into the rotation and it gets used 5 days a week.
I honestly would not have bought one if they didn’t offer this color. It’s a great device and I have zero regrets on this expensive purchase.
At the very start of my vaping journey it did as I wanted a vape that looked like a nicotine vape so I could use it outside without people knowing. I used the Mighty+ outside with the native cooling unit and for some time this was fine until I got my TM2.
What I find these days is that the look of the stem and the vapour going threw the stem being able to be seen is important for me for some reason. I like a stem that is long enough so you can see the vapour and it must be a clear glass stem so I can watch the vapour. So for me if I am purchase new vape it must be able to take a clear glass stem.
The other thing is with desktop vapes I prefer a vape that can sit in a living room and not stand out as a weed vape and be an eye sore to anyone visiting who does not vape. This is why I like the Ruby Twist as its has a small form factor so can just sit in the corner.
I must admit I wish I had the green solo 3 even If I do not use my current black version.
Aesthetics are a plus, since you’re spending quality time with the device. My Dynavap cases are beauties, tigerwood, applewood for an organic vibe. Frolic may look industrial but it works industrial too! Maybe it’s materials that matter to me. Stashbox is titanium. That “soviet sex toy” thing was pretty funny! @grindy Yeah, I don’t want a medical device that looks like getting high out of a 1970s walkie-talkie, lol.
Save my pennies for a work of art German log vape, definitely in burled wood (sigh).
Now that I’m down the baller rabbit hole, my focus is on details that aren’t readily visible. Things like material choices, dimensions, and the manufacturer’s choice of thermal mass aren’t always obvious. These days, those are the things I pay attention to. That said, I still enjoy firing up my LSV in a darkened room.
The look does kind of influence me, yes. I kind of want a Simrell Hydro because I think it would look good sitting on my bubbler.
I’m going to be building a log vape soon. I have multiple spreadsheets of parts and options and how they’ll all fit together depending on which direction I go. I could make it pretty small but that would force a pigtail jack or the power cable permanently attached. Or if I bump up the diameter a bit I could accommodate a high quality DC female jack on the side. I think I want the smallest option possible, but aesthetically and functionally the pigtail might annoy me.
The look of a vape does influence me a lot more now but it wasn’t always that way. When I first started vaping, there weren’t really a ton of vapes to choose from and looks didn’t really matter at all to me. I just wanted to find a vape that worked well.
Now that I’ve been vaping for years and there’s a lot more choice, I find myself really attracted to artisan vapes for their beauty. I’ll still always choose function over form though. If a vape looks amazing but consistently gives me a shitty high, I’m not putting up with that. It would be like buying a nice looking peach knowing that when you bite into it, it’ll taste like prison ass.
I love my Couchlogs every time I use them because they’re beautiful and handmade but they also function incredibly well. I can’t wait to get my hands on the Musa3000 or the Ubik because they look like home runs too.
For me it was the opposite. When I first saw the S&B Crafty I fell in love with the looks. As a Sci-Fi lover it looked like a vape from the movie “Aliens”, in my head I saw myself vaping in some weird battered space ship
Your Z series stuff looks elegant to me above any other attribute. They have sleek lines, smooth tapers, and that clean all black zirc ceramic.
Mako isn’t so much like that but definitely falls under cool because it’s still a sleek design but a functional one I’ve never seen done before in any capacity with the fins.
Yeah the Z-series stuff looks cool and tastes great. I really like the new look of the ZXL with the zirc handle and all. Still really happy with just my ZX though. Keeps the tolerance in check.
I’m sure looks influences purchase decisions, but it’s low on the list. If it were high on the list I never would have gotten the Tafee Bowle or the Solo 3. Aesthetically I think they are dogs. I’m much more concerned with performance and ease of use, and these days probably the most important factor is if and where it fit’s in my collection, what is the case(s) that a new vape would be superior to what I have now.
Aesthetics are certainly something I consider. Material is always something I take into consideration. My sessions are more often ritualistic and wood helps me connect to this. The only ones I own which do not have wood incorporated in the device are : volcano classic, ceramo, convector, zooter and herbo. Everything else, either the primary material or the sleeve is wooden.
I have my first “wooden” vaporizer now (TM2), and I agree that when you hold it there is a different connection or is this just because it feels better, more organic. But for me also the look of wood gives it something extra.
