Both are actually correct. There, I said it.
I say “giff” though because it follows pronunciation of things like gift and give, and the first letter stands for graphics which has the same sounding G. Jif doesn’t fit right for me so I don’t use it.

This is exactly how I feel as well. The word is graphic. I know what the GIF creator has said, but he is wrong! You just can’t change how a word is pronounced because you want to!

i pronounce it jif, because when that shit came out it was pronounced jif.
the man who invented it, pre internet, was on record stating how its pronounced. The computer world abided, it was like knowing what “LOL” meant back then.
and then years later, it became a popular format for animated graphics and the hard G pronunciation war happened.
The creator, Steve Wilhite, likely tired of the endless internet argument, declared that both pronunciations are acceptable.
acronyms don’t have phonetic rules, although i do agree that the hard g would feel more natural. A giraffe interchange format would definitely be jif though, right?

we used to pass around 3.5 discs with naked lady jpegs.. the pic would load top down and would take like 20 mins… ooo oooooo here comes the … turns off the monitor in computer lab class in 6th grade

This was back in the mid-80s, when Apple had the school market cornered. I think we were the first class to have a computer course for one of the 4/4 of the school year. What was even funnier is that the wood shop/metal shop teacher taught the class.

that’s aces.. in HS our auto shop class and wood shop class had some fabulous vacums and venting.. needless to say a lot of smot was poked and escaped via said venting… like the scene in dazed and confused where they are making bongs in woodshop… photo class was also aces as blackroom/red light etc.. lot of hanky panky happening in there
