Just an FYI: If anyone is on the fence about getting the shortened tube for the YLL 3.0, I would highly recommend it. I’ve been able to finally get a really nice dark roast on a single hit with the YLL on 90w @ 53sec with a lightly tapped bowl, filled 1/3 to half way.
Question:
What are others using to cool down their crowns if they don’t have a dedicated cooler?
Been fence riding the insert, but reinforcements like this are pushing me towards grabbing one…and maybe some sic balls lol
I’ve really nailed down a perfect routine using a torch to heat the Ti bowl slightly and Yll combo. Would rather ditch the torch though and have the Yll do all the work.
I used the toothbrush/razor holder that @FortyFistHits suggested in post 253. It’s great but does get quite warm to touch after repeated use. The wood lined one crown sells might be an improvement and I probably will get that at some point.
What settings are you using with the YLL? And how long are you preheating the bowl with a torch? I just use the YLL currently and the process is kind of a pain. I do 80w for 20s, then put crown on empty bowl for 10 seconds, then back in YLL for 80w 45s. It works pretty well but doesn’t feel like the most efficient way to do things. I like the idea of a single heatup and preheat with torch right before the YLL times out.
85w for 57 seconds. When the timer hits 20 left I start warming the bowl top. Gives me time to put the torch down and pull the crown. Don’t overheat the bowl or combustion will follow lol. I like to see a little trail of vapor coming from the bowl…just a little. Nice OHE.
Is this the original shortened quartz insert or the updated, slightly longer one? I know lots of folks were getting overcurrent errors with the first version that JCVAP put out.
This one is a prototype and has a slightly too large ID (8.10mm) but it still works well, no tips fall out when inverting or decapping. But it definitely needs to shrink down, so I’m looking forward to seeing the revised wpa out there soon!
I have been tinkering again. I couldn’t source MH or Simrell click disks so I ripped apart an old Dynavap cap. The cap contains 2 discs, a lower heat disc labelled “RU” and a higher heat disc with “S4”(I think). I experimented with placement. Waiting for the 2nd click resulted in combustion so I ended up just using the one “RU” disk in top of a cap full of 2mm SiC balls so - when it clicks - it clicks against the top of the cap.
This configuration works well for me and guards against combustion during longer sessions. I have actually misplaced the high temp disc now which is frustrating because I wish the cooldown “click back” was more audible. The discs need something to snap against.
I decided to just use 2x crown caps with SiC balls to use with my YLL IH 3.0 for back to back hits. Cold start for both so watts and seconds stay that same, and I’ve never done more than two bowls in a row anyway. The crown is small enough that adding another doesn’t take up too much extra space in my travel case.
No click discs available to order in my country, so they’d end up costing as much as a Crown cap after shipping and taxes etc
