I haven’t seen much talk about the Moisture Content of the cannabis being vaped. It seems like it would make a significant impact on the vaporization signature and consistency of a device. I work on getting mine to around 10%. I’ve purchased premium brands that are 5%.
I think it’s incredibly important - both for preserving buds and for creating quality vapor.
Vapor from moist flower is less harsh than dry flower, but I’m not convinced that bud moisture translates directly to moisture in the vapor.
To this day I still cringe at the memory of vape geeks recommending leaving their herb out on a piece of paper for a day so it would vape better in their Ghost MV1.
I generally run 62% RH Boveda packs. When I ran dryer the flower tended to powder and my vapes needed constantly cleaned. The 62%RH gives a fluffy grind even when using a fine grind. I haven’t experienced it, but I was warned to be careful going higher than 62% since that is apparently as moist as you can store without without the risk of mold (no idea if that is true) and I could only get 62 and 64%RH packs at the head shop.
I think my boveda’s are the 58%ers? Lots of fog and humidity on the coast to contend with. I like tinted glass jars also. Maybe a bag set up to keep the strains separate in the jar. Layers. Like when the stash comes out in breakfast club.
I use 62% Moiscon packs, or 62% Boveda. Haven’t developed mold, so far. I’d go down to 57%, but no lower. I don’t want dried out, crumbly cannabis. I make sure my crop is dry, toss in jar with 62% humidity pack and a hygrometer to monitor, vacuum seal and store. If I take bud from a jar, I vacuum seal it again, and the moisture stays where it should. I don’t worry about the bud I take out, as it will be gone in a few days.
When I got into vaping I tried the moisture packs because it seemed like everyone was using them. But I didn’t like soft buds.
I do wonder about different environments. Where I live on Long Island the RH is always kinda high. Maybe people that live in low RH areas are more susceptible to dry weed.
If bud is from the dispensary, I’m not sure if Boveda will help as much. If something is going to be jarred for months and potentially years, I like to help with stability in the jarred environment with moisture and heat. Mine go in after the drying to get to where I want the bud to be, and they just hang out in the jar with a micrometer so I can check for moisture without opening the vacuum sealed jar. I’ve tossed small packets in my daily use jars, but if the jar is opened in less than 24 hours, it doesn’t do much but take up space.
Still, I’m not convinced they are an absolute requirement. Some jars were packed up with no moisture pack for long term storage, and they seem fine. Getting the initial dry right seems to be the most important part.
When it comes to trying my own flower, i try to remove 40% of the moisture in the first 24h by lowering the humidity in the room to 45%RH. Then i increase the humidity in the room in the following days until i end at 57%RH. After more or less 14days its done (depending on bud sizes and room temp). I then double Vac seal it and place it in the fridge. Usually i don´t use boveda packs, i used to put them in the second layer of the double vac seal but stopped doing that eventually. Something to notice is that the flower need to warm up to room temp before you open it from the fridge otherwise moisture can condensate on the flower which can lead to mold. Also cold flower should be handled careful to not brake of the trichomes.
About the general discussion i think flower with a bit more moisture vapes and stores better, and as far as i remember for smoking i preferred the flower a bit dryer.
I am not sure about the moisture content, i think at the end the focus should be on water activity to prevent mold. Would love to see an affordable device to measure the water activity, instead of placing something in a container with a hygrometer.
My experience is different. I shoot for 62% but have vaped stuff as high as 66% with no noticeable difference. A while back a friend gave me some old dispensary bud he didn’t like. My first try of had the same impression-harsh and made me cough. Then I measured it’s humidity-53%. Brought that up to 62% and retried the bud-totally different, was totally pleasant to vape.
OP-are you sure you are vaping 5-10% stuff? I would think at those levels the weed would be mostly dust.
Moisture content measures how much water is actually in the bud itself. Relative humidity, on the other hand, tells you how much moisture is in the air inside the jar.
Thanks for the tip, i actually have a similar moisture meter but i stopped using it.
I think the measurement depends to much on the bud structure and the current will probably only measure the moisture content close to the surface area.

I see, we are talking about two different things. I’m a bit familiar with the type of meter you linked-they are used by some people to check moisture content in firewood. Apparently there the desired range is 10-15% up to 20% per my google search. I would think fresher bud would have a higher moisture content because the water would leach out from the interior of the bud. Which explains another thing I’ve been puzzling over-I grow my own and jar it. Yesterday I checked some jars I put up at 62% back in April and they were 66%. One mystery at least now solved (g). Have to buy some bovedas or burp the jars once in a while.
