Great ideas about the heater mods. The bottom of the handle gets a little warm after a second heat up and second bowl for me. A third is getting pretty hot, but doable for my fingers if holding the top portion. A pair of tongs could come in handy
Oh wow, didn’t even think about this. I have that tiny glass bowl you offered with the ZX and a larger one with glass screen, nice!
Just tried and it worked perfectly. Packed the bowl full and got some great hits. Same temp and roast I would do/get with the Z bowl. Couple of thoughts for the bowl. Some sort of handle maybe. I’m impatient and like to empty and brush out immediately so I’ve left it on an adapter I’m using when doing that. Doesn’t take too long to cool though, I’m loading up another fairly quickly. Was also thinking of a grove half way down the bowl to hold a 1/2 mesh screen.

I was thinking of adding some fat o-rings to the ribbed section of the handle to help with the heat buildup there.

Mako paired with the ZX American glass bowl in full convection mode!
Appreciate the early feedback!
Happy Friday to everyone vaping along!

What methods have you used to heat yours? Do you use torch or induction?

A glass bowl is fun with this for sure. Full convection mode as mentioned
I’ve been using the inductor again with it’s original (V1) head which puts out a lot more power.

Any idea when the next batch (which I placed an order from) will be ship out? Thanks!

Not soon enough. It better have some improvements.

This thing has truly peaked my interest. Really into manual vapes without balls. Can’t wait to hear more.

The next round will have some changes to further balance the thermal mass.
I’m also evaluating changing the bowl to titanium for a snappier conduction response.
These two changes should allow for much quicker heatup time.
I’m also awaiting a quote for 20mm coil inserts for PID controlled electric heating.
With the new website anyone with a pending pre-order will be able to add one on easily if they want to try it.
Cheers to everyone following along and supporting the vision!
Edit:
For anyone who supported the first round I’ll have an upgrade discount for you.

You had me at titanium
Should we be on the lookout for an email or something?

Looking forward to it…great call with Titainum.

+1 for the titanium bowl, that sounds perfect. Lucky me didn’t get a shipping notification yet, so I guess I’m in round 2

Did you say you were using a torch also?
Plan on using my Big Shot on it this weekend (assuming I get some more stuff ground) as well as the portable Inductor setup and wanted to see how long i should hit it with the flame? I think I read a post saying 18 seconds worked.

Yea, big buddy for about 18 with a good flame. Vid towards the top with that torch

Yes I’ll send out a quick email this weekend. I’m about to fire up the grill and clock out for the day. Hope everybody is gearing up for a super terpy weekend!
The new changes are now approved for production.
Here’s a mock-up render of the next Mako heater.
The bowl will maintain the current design but will be built from pure titanium.
The titanium bowl should heat and cool nearly twice as fast as the steel bowl.
Steel was chosen for the original bowl to provide material congruence, but in testing, even after serious weight reduction efforts, the high mass of stainless steel is extending heatup time and optimizing for efficiency is a big goal of this concept.
This change should provide a more robust and rapid conduction response, as well as reduce heatup time / reheats.
20mm coil insert for electric heating is on the website and available for preorder as well.
These will fit the 20mm ZXL coils on the website.
I’m looking for more IH feedback particularly with the Wand.
Does it fit well enough, or does everybody have in Tempest adapters that are obstructing the fitment? I’ve had a few emails from customers with Wands.
I believe the Tempest adapter is 14mm and these are 14.5mm
Potentially if the demand / necessity is there, the design could maybe be modified to fit that adapter better. I’m reaching out to the community for suggestions and advice on that aspect to work with peoples setups. The first gen design has a lot of mass, but it is estimated the next round will be heating significantly quicker and thus more Wand friendly.
I’ve added a News / Blog section to the website where I’m planning to post more concepts and updates as well.

So with the new design and the coil adapter do you expect it to shed heat so that the handle fins never get too hot?
I’m kinda worried i might forget i left it in the coil and the whole thing is 400+ degrees when i finally go to grab it.

Yes.
The revised center post is significantly thinner with much less area.
Electricity / heat both transfer more when the diameter is larger. This is why thinner wire (larger gauge) has more resistance.
The math suggests a 84% reduction in conduction heat transfer from that change alone.
Then the distance from the heater head to the handle has been increased 25% as well, with just a very small increase in the total length of the device. This will further reduce conduction creep.
The handle fins are 50% thinner with decreased density and increased spacing which should promote further heat dissipation.
When testing coil heating with the first round of the mako I found around the first 1/3 of the handle can get fairly warm with coil heating.
But the coil insert also heats differently.
Using my ZXL coil by itself for example, the mako is recessed much deeper inside the coil, compared to if using the coil insert. The coil insert matches the taper to apply heat directly to and only to the heater fins. This increased efficiency also means a lower set temperature on the PID, which further reduces conduction creep.
A little bit if the aggressive look is lost with this weight reduction, but I believe of these mods working in harmony together should result in some real improvements to the vapor / user experience.

Will it be possible to purchase the first version of the heater anyway? The improvements sound good, but I’m sad to see the look completely changing.
