Brilliant Cut Grinder VS Old Mate Aroma 3 Hot Take

So after owning both the Large BCG and the Aroma 3 I personally prefer the BCG for three main reasons.

1. When I am done scooping and want to put the top two pieces back onto the bottom plate I find the BCG you just get it anywhere close to together and the magnets give it a satisfying clap as the plates come together. With the Aroma 3 you have to actually pay attention to get it to line up before it will close.

  1. I find when scooping herb from the BCG the metal of the scoop glides smoothly across the bottom whereas with the Aroma 3 the scoop jerks and jumps a bit like there is more friction. I’ve found this both clean and dirty. Several times has this caused a half scoop of herb to go flying out of the scoop. I don’t know if its just a bit better finish or the anodizing of the BCG but I definitely notice a difference.
  2. The seal of the BCG lets me throw it in a bag and not have to worry about spillage. With the Aroma3 it looses herb in between the top two plates.

I will say the spinning top on the Aroma 3 is awesome and truly what keeps it in the rotation.

What’s your experience been?

100% in agreement.

When i switched my OMD bearings back to OEM it lost a lot of joy. The need for a finer grind is what pulled me back to the BCG.

I agree! I also think the grind from the bcg is a little better than the Aroma’s. I have tried to migrate back to the bcg and to other grinders, but the spinny thing keep me coming back.

I tell people the bcg is best for the grind, and the aroma is best for my ritual. Not everyone cares about fidget things, but for those that do, it’s fucking addictive.

I have both as well. I like them both but the BCG has a nicer design imo. It gives a nicer grind, feels nicer in the hand, and it’s lighter in your bag.

The oldmate it great though!

I guess I’m the contrarian here. After getting the Aroma3, I’ve never even looked at my BCG.

The grind might not be as fluffy, but that bearing makes frictionless grinding so nice and easy, I won’t go back.

I agree with you on that. Even though I use both (one at home, the other at the workshop), overall I prefer the Aroma3, which is an incredible machine. On the other hand, the Aroma seems more prone to scratches.

I do prefer the BCG to the aroma-3. I also think the Aroma-2 is a more capable and better grinder than the aroma-3 in the right hands.

I have 6 BCG’s and 2 Aroma 3’s in daily use. I agree with everything you said.

This is fascinating. Is the aroma 2 able to put out a fine grind? That’s the one thing that sets the aroma 3 down for me… I can’t get a fine grind without making a mess.

I went back to my stainless steel BCG for the course plate so until the aroma 3 comes out with a course plate. It’ll be sitting on my shelf collecting dust, unfortunately

How would you rank the coarse, medium and fine plate for BCG?

all have very consistent grinds and, imo, have finer grinds than you’d expect from each plate.

Thanks for the insight! I think i’ll have to get a BCG now. Whats your favorite to use among the 3?

go for which one fits your style. coarse for lower temp flavor chasers. Troy likes a finer grind for his thick, high intensity hits. I stick more to the middle with the medium grind.

Is the Aroma 3 a finer grind compared to the BCG or is it the other way around? I’ve heard different opinions.

Aroma 3 is coarser than the BCG fine plate. I haven’t used the BCG medium in a while, so I’d have to reference photos or grind some nugs

Cool thanks. I’ve got an Aroma 3 on the way, I can’t believe I spent so much on a grinder! After finding I’ve lost some paint on the teeth of my cheap shitty grinder that was enough for me.

Maybe I’ll eventually have to get a BCG as well…

And let’s in

And let’s be honest here, with vapes, the size of the grind matters most, not the looks of the grind. A BCG makes a beautiful looking grind but that is more for us to enjoy before we vape it.

A vapaholic doesn’t need many grinders. Maybe fine, medium, and coarse plates, and a medium grinder. And perhaps a large grinder for heavy users (I go large).

But the difference between top tier grinders isn’t worth the money for most folks to buy all of them. None of them have reinvented the wheel. Some have refined the wheel a bit.

Grinders are like forks. They do what they are built to do. And fancy grinders are like fancy forks. In many ways they just do what the plastic forks do but with more style and ergonomics. How many fancy forks do you really need?

I side with the BCG for its fancier looking grind, easier portability (heavy but smooth and therefore more pocketable) and better seal. It is the slightly better top tier grinder in my book. But the Aroma 3 comes so close, and yeah, the fidget spinner gives it a feel of whimsy. I am happy when I have enough strains to break it out. And I spin it every time.

Both are top shelf grinders. Pick one, get the plates you think you will need. And be happy for years, decades, or for life. Until they reinvent the grinder, either of these will be a step up from what you use.

Own them both as well though my BCG is regular size I still prefer it. It wins my reach test almost every day for the same reasons especially the feel and the magnet :magnet: just no turning back shitty grinders after trying these :denmark:

I’m an Aroma-3 guy too. Best and most expensive grinder I ever bought and I never looked back. In all fairness, the BCG might be an even better grinder but I had no intentions of finding out because the Aroma-3 was so much better than any other grinder I previously owned.
