The Firewood 12 is out and, imo, it is a very important upgrade. The size and form factor is identical to the 11 and all parts are the same with the exception of the WPA. Here are my thoughts:

  1. The importance of this upgrade is moving FROM a ceramic bowl TO a quartz one. What’s nice is that the quartz sleeve comes out for easy cleaning. I’ve got the 11 and believe me, the cleanup is much easier with the 12. It reminds me of an induction heater setup. Visible coils with the quartz piece able to be removed.

  2. The quartz improvement makes this slightly more convection in nature than previous versions and the taste is naturally better with the quartz.

  3. Battery life is slightly improved. With the 11 I could get around 8 bowls. I can get at least 1 bowl more with the 12. Again, I attribute this improvement to the quartz upgrade.

  4. The unit does seem to get a bit hotter than the 11 but not significantly.

  5. Airflow seems to better even though Marc recommends a tighter pack for the 12. So don’t be afraid to pack tight.

  6. The screen set up is different than previous versions. The screen no longer slides in a slotted section of the bowl but instead uses a triangle spacer to keep the screen propped up and keeps it from falling down. With this triangle piece alone, it is a little tricky to get the screen in position so in the pictures provided I am using a Dani Fusion 2 screen on top of the triangle and then the mesh screen sits on top of that.

I’m working other solutions and I found out that the Fury 3 dosing capsule fits perfectly into the bowl and the mesh screen fits right on top (the mesh screen is not needed). This may be my permanent solution. The picture of the AVB is both herb in the oven (left) and herb in the Fury 3 dosing capsule. Two for 1 special!

Summary: Same form factor, same great performance as the 11. Better flavor, better battery life than the 11. The screen system is a bit awkward in my opinion but just a minor qualm of mine.

Those thinking about passing on this one because you have the 11, the quartz setup is well-worth the purchase in my opinion. I suspect other future editions will stay with quartz but who knows.

I hate screens that fall out, on my stem loaders I only use stems with a built in glass screen. Has the screen “glued” itself in place yet?

I wonder if there will be an update to keeping the screen in place.

It is a minor inconvenience. The screen does get sticky and somewhat stays in place, but a nice tap on the wood and the screen will fall out…along with the spacer.

Found Dynavap Hyperdyn dosing caps fit perfect as well. Put one in bottom of bowl without the cap then push screen on top of it. Hasn’t fallen out yet like the triangle piece did also, perfect fit for another dosing cap on top fits perfect under air intake holes of bowl. Still playing but definitely a little more conduction with using dosing capsule. So far loaded dosing capsule comes out and screen and lower capsule staying in.

I am so intrigued with the firewoods. Been holding back but sure looks like a nice addition to the collection.
