the software allows tags to be grouped - so i grouped them accordingly.

it also has settings to limit tags based on the category. I’m sure improvements will be needed :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I think tags are great feature here, and will become really useful as there is more contents. From my experience as an enterprise data managers, a good Tag Taxonomy (how the tags are organized and grouped) is important. Thanks for starting the process.

I don’t know if mods or other trust levels are able to edit tags, but ideally every topic should be tagged. When new tags are added, some retro-tagging may be needed to keep things consistent.

I did some reading on Tags in the Discourse Admin Manual (yep, I read manuals - sometime medicated, sometimes not)

Auto tagging looks like a useful feature too, but would need to be well thought out. Auto tagging is based on a word or phrase match in the first post of a topic.

I don’t think Discourse supports sub-tag groups, so we are limited to one level of tag groups. Also, I’ve learned through hard lessons that the first attempt to create a taxonomy usually requires a second attempt a year or two later. Luckily, Discourse supports bulk tag management.

Another nice feature of Discourse is the ability to finely control who can add or edit tags, based on group membership. This could allow for one or more Tag Moderators that can change and manage tags, but nothing else. I’m also not sure how much tag related permissions are granted to higher trusted users.

There can also be sub-categories, for example:

Desktop

  • Ball Vape
  • Log Vapes
  • Other Vapes

Categorization is a trade off of granularity and usability.

One possible tag taxonomy, to build on the grouping that Troy has already done, is this. Remember, as long as we allow multiple tags per topic, tags don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

  • Devices/Desktop
  • Devices/Dab
  • Devices/Portable
  • Accessories/Grinders
  • Accessories/Induction Heaters
  • Accessories/Storage
  • Accessories/Cleaning
  • Accessories/Other Accessories
