Is it possible to maintain a non-lined wood stem or WPA?

I finally decided to upgrade from the dynavap bonger WPA and picked up a beautiful Ed’s TNT wpa in cocobolo!

When I received it I was surprised to find it doesn’t have a metal lining inside. Does that mean this works a bit more of a sticky brick piece where it gets dirty and developed a taste and that’s part of the way it works? Or should I be wiping it down somehow with cotton buds and water? I wasn’t really aware that unlined stems is a thing

How do you guys maintain your unlined wood stems? Are there any things you prefer about them over a lined stem?

Wood is one of the few materials I can taste in my vapor, so I usually have a condenser tube in the unlined wood stems.

Ah you can taste the wood? That’s interesting! I’m a bit more concerned that when I eventually next combust I’ll be able to taste that for the next week!

I can taste the wood, too.

I guess it’s subjective. I used to appreciate the signature variety with the different woods, but these days I prefer purity.

Does Eds TNT make anything lined? He should be one of the first we invite once the site is out of beta

Hmm I’m not sure that does make one that’s lined now that I’m looking through his site.

Ed recommends using it without a condenser and cleaning out the wood with iso. People on EntExchange discord recommended using it without a condenser and cleaning it by rubbing some wood wax inside it and then wiping it out.

From Ed the man himself:

“I suggest using it natively, the vapor will coat the inside of it with use. I recommend using a cotton swab dipped in high proof alcohol, squeeze out the excess then swab the inner bore til you have removed the residue, let dry then use as you like.”
