Very interesting! I wasn’t sure I got everything for the MAKO when I first opened the package. 
Holding on pics until I know it’s ok but this should be fun to play with. Hopefully I don’t overheat it my first time!
Looking forward to sharing and seeing others’ times and settings for induction heaters!

Ryan @invertedisdead do you have any tips or flash timing numbers for using with the Wand?
I think I could really have fun with the portable Inductor setup but it’ll be a few days before I can get to that.

My first run with it went well. It definitely takes some good heating from cold. Inductor at 26V and around 25 seconds or more. I did pull off a couple of times to gauge how hot it might be. Got a couple of good pure convection hits. ABV was really light and sandwiched like a hockey puck. Have a vid I need to cleanup that I’ll share.
Shot the Big Buddy at it a little too long (was already hot) for the 3rd bowl and almost combusted. Pulled it out to save and most of the herbs stuck to the bottom. This will be fun!

I was gonna give it a try last night but discovered the glass adapter for the Tempest in my wand blocks it from going in all the way. The glass was in there pretty tight so I ended up not getting to use it last night.
Will try to test it out this weekend though!
Edit: ok so it’s actually the wand glass that doesn’t fit it on top. You can load it from the underside however (I finally got the tempest adapter out) and ive done some test heat sessions with the wand. I went 15 flashes the first time and think that may not be enough… the goal is to not combust my first time but I think it’s just gonna take some trial and error since nobody has input on it yet.

Lil Mako action, this was like my second or third time trying the vape! I think the bowl was around 1/3 filled; tons of room for more herb.
The ULPv3 bowl is volumetrically similar to the 3rd shelf on the ZX.
The fixed screen is inspired by S&B dosing caps.
The screen being all the way at the bottom allows for incredibly easy brushing.
Heating tips: focus heating the lower 2/3’s of the fins. The rest of the fins will naturally be heated by the materials conduction; and if torching, radiant heat creep.
As I mentioned in the Z thread we can consider this system under active development with plans for many potential use cases and ports for other materials and vape platforms (25mm diffuser, convection assembly for the Simrell, next gen ZX, etc)
I will say this initial first round prototype did come out a little bit overbuilt. There was a consideration for a wood or plastic handle, but the first round design had some emphasis on the great look and feel of the 100% unibody construction.
The original design was 100% quartz so the conduction creep is a little bit more than initially calculated. However I find in use this can be mitigated somewhat by heating lower on the fins and working with the materials natural thermal resistance.
I am 100% open to everyone’s feedback and very much looking forward to developing this new concept even further, directly with the real “boots on the ground” vape community!

Thanks! I’ve been using it wrong and was wondering why there wasn’t a screen included. A 1/2 mesh sits in the injection part fairly loose and thought that was how it was supposed to be. Like the top position on the ZX bowl. Still works as a micro-dose method I guess! Now I’ll be loading more than a pinch LOL.

Do you think it would heat faster if you rotated 45 degrees every few seconds or something? I dunno how deep the inductor wand pushes that energy but I was wondering if the outer fins are getting hotter and having to send that heat up to the base before it can work its way up the inner fins.

I’ve been hitting the flat part for an equal amount of time on each side. Now that I’ll need more heat for the correctly seated lower herb, I’ll try a slow spin to get the distribution all over it. Good call

I’ve switched from the inductor to a torch like I did with my Stunner SS cap. It just seems to work better & faster. This bowl definitely gets HOT and so does the joint area of the glass it’s in. The low profile adapter I lifted the second time I almost dropped. Been using a pass-through or extension instead.
This little mag sink works well for handling the hot bowl

That’s the way I was planning to use my Mako when it arrives. Did you count the seconds? And where’s that neat little heat sink from?

Around 18 seconds or so with a big bulky flame. Been trying my medium (tool box store) torch that also has a fairly big, but more precise flame. A little longer with that. I tried with the Wand and it’s going to need a lot more dialing in. I let it flash 30 times but could only get whispy (and very tasty!) vapor. I dunno if the Wand is powerful enough to have this be a good use case for it but will try with 35 and 40 flashes (and fresh batteries) sometime this week.

From what I’ve seen so far, I’d definitely consider the Wand underpowered. I mean, both Inductor and Big Buddy are beasts. Guess it takes a Yll 3.0 at least.

Guess this thing is scary?
I have a Big Buddy-like torch from the hardware store, which alone is a bit intimidating. It’ll take some courage for me to point an even bigger flame on a brand new device. Happy to see you trying it first hopefully

Definitely do not sleep on trying the Mako with a 14mm glass bowl in pure convection mode!
However be cautious as the heatup time is quite a bit less than with the stainless steel bowl.

I’ve been testing this vape out extensively this last week having a lot of fun getting some thick low temp hits. I have some good ideas for adjusting the mass of the heater and will be making some modifications for round 2.
The whole vape is absolutely zombie proof for sure but I can tell the main center post is definitely sucking up a good amount of heat leading to longer heatup times.
I’m going to reduce the diameter of the center post to remove a lot of mass there.
And I’m going to make that center post longer to increase the buffer distance from the heater to the handle base.
The handle fins will also be thinned down for some weight reduction.
The high surface area Turbulent + Laminar heating allows for extremely smooth hits from this wide open airflow for very quick vapor clearance, however I know people like the visual perception of a reduced airflow giving the appearance of denser vapor so I think this could be tuned to choke the airflow down a bit.
P.S. has anyone tried the Mako bowl with their ZX yet?
There was some curiosity by some of the Z Team regarding a hybrid bowl for the ZX, it dawned on me this should fill that role as well!
