DIY (ish) - jackrod’s log vapes

Sure I can ship anywhere.

I haven’t made any with stabilized wood. The wood does get warm and the air flows next to it, so I don’t want to have any risk of offgassing something nasty. Dyed light colored wood could be a possibility.

Nice. Yes, that is an understandable concern!

They reminded me of the custom stabilized wood 510 vape mods that were all the rage a while back. I never got one. Maybe I can get one of these! How would one go about getting one? Thanks for your reply!

I am pleased to announce I am now in the Jackrod log fam. This is my first log vape but certainly won’t be my last. This Piece is not wood but ceramic. My contribution to this was selecting the ceramic piece that i’m using for the actual log exterior. Everything else is fabbed. including wiring by Jackrod himself. The log core is a 20 12
I am delighted with this log. It is on the large size (my choice) so my next log will be smaller to better use it with water pieces.
Since i have gotten it i have been focusing on refining my technique. My favorite thing for now is to heat soak the log bowl before the introduction of the herb. The optimum operating temperature for me is somewhere around 8.3 v with my little variable power supply. But I have been experimenting with a nice range of heat up voltages between 9 to 11 v. I did see a tiny bit of immediate Combusion at 11 v. 10 volts is probably optimum at least for me.

This has such a nice taste. Personally this is so much more important to me than production of clouds. But i can report that using the above technique i get 2 or 3 strong hits with much visible vapor. So i would say the bowl size is pretty much optimized . But i am still clearly experimenting. Running it at 7 to 7.5 volts give soft wispy vapor and while some people would not appreciate the subtle vapor i can report it is very effective.

Jackrod supplied this log with a nice set of glass stems that he made up himself. The variety of stems is more than a nice to have. If you sit on this for a while even at a lower temp the stem will get hot to the touch. No problem i have another fresh stem to use at that point. Jackrod also gave me a small fixture to create addl screens. I still need to add some more as I have a tendency to pull too hard and that results in bits of herb into the stem. This can clog the stem which the extra screens should eliminate.

The other thing i have been working on is batteries. I mean i did mention that i had a small power supply but it requires 115v ac. And i would like to use batteries with this to make it truly portable. I bought an adapter on Amazon that allows me to use my DeWalt tool batteries 20 v as power source . Ultimately my desire is to fab an adapter that would allow small 12 v Milwaukee batteries to be used.

The other thing i am trying to figure out is how to read the actual temperatures that i am seeing. If you have not heard of it, there is a relatively inexpensive temperature carb cap device, the Yocan Heat Vision can read temps and is normally used with dabs. I think i got mine on Element Vape for like $30.

Kudos for Jackrod for making this happen. It was definitely worth the wait. This is an excellent but simple design and i commend Jackrod for basically making this design Open Source.

Thats pretty cool, is that ceramic piece you chose sold as something else? Is that wood base attached to it?

Really glad you’re pleased with the log and thanks for the detailed post! Some responses:
Interesting technique with preheating the bowl, before herb introduction. Don’t think I’ve heard of that before. One other possibility is using a thin wall (0.5mm) stainless steel stem/bowl. I have made some on the new wood lathe, with glass balls inside to cool a bit. This quickly heats up to temp quickly when mated with the heater and also holds substantially more herb (50% at the same depth). Can also make them short and fitting a 14mm or 18mm joint for water pipe use.

Glad it’s tasting good. I do think the 8-9mm diameter bowl is about the right size for a balanced, efficient result given the amount of hot mass, airflow etc. The big ones can be fun too, but are likely realistically better served with a different vape.

That battery-power idea sounds cool. The 12V milwaukee batteries would be a good power source. There are some buck converter modules which have a nice lab supply type of interface for adjustability, as well as adapters from M12 batteries to wires, with fuses. Ideally you will also need over-discharge protection. I believe a module I have allows setting a limit where if input voltage is too low, it will shut off the output.

As far as reading actual temps, I don’t think that the heat vision will give great results. It has a wide field of view and relies on being placed inside a banger where it is surrounded by the IR radiation. Furthermore the bulb raidates most of its power in the IR spectrum, so in effect you may end up reading filament temp, which is much, much hotter than the core surface temp. I’d rather get small bead K-type thermocouple, and a TC reader, and probe the temp right at the corner of the screen and the heater cover, if you want to know e.g. how long the heatup time is. You may be surprised at the temp range that the log reaches under normal conditions, it is pretty hot, above 250C. However remember that the AIR temperature reached is lower, otherwise there could not be heat transfer from heater to air. You may be able to probe this too if you’re curious, but I find this not to be too informative and rather just increase/decrease voltage and let equilibriate for 10 minutes to find my temp range.

The ceramic piece was a vase. I drilled through the bottom with a diamond hole saw, to make it into a ceramic tube.

The wood base is not attached. I couldn’t think of a satisfactory way to attach it, that would allow removal for changing the bulb, and also not risk cracking of the vase e.g. with screws that would put high-pressure points. Instead the wood base has a felt-lined hole which cradles the vase and prevents it from tipping. The heater is mounted to a post through the new bottom hole of the vase.

Delicious OHE with the 2012!

Preheated the wpa with a torch and let her rip

You can more or less dial in the level of conduction you want with the torch, great for nightcaps

I love the 2012, it’s my introduction to log vapes and halogen.

The vapour quality is so smooth for a predominantly convection experience.

Beautiful! I have one too and love it. What is that glass, please? I’d like to find something like that, I think

Which one do you have, got pics in it’s natural habitat?

The glass is a n3rdglass sherlock. Simrell has been selling them for a while. Not sure if there are more coming or not. I think I heard n3rdglass may be moving onto other designs. It looks like they are in stock, would recommend scooping from there as it’s a great price on a USA made piece! Other members on discord have been pleased with theirs as well specifically pairing with the logs. Speaking of which you all can join my discord below for the latest updates, got some other stuff in the pipeline.
